In Order to Simplify our Lives

Local Costa Rican Beach

Sometimes it is very easy to simplify things. For example, in Costa Rica, nobody actually owns any of the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean coastal beaches which, by the way, rank amongst the best in the world. The water is warm for most of the year. Nearly two thirds of Costa Rica’s borders are coastline.

Everyone has beach access – local residents, visitors, and tourists. It is the law. All of us can walk, surf and enjoy them. This is a simple idea, but amazingly effective.

In Costa Rica, we have a home in an eco reserve – actually it‘s a treehouse built of steel, glass and teak. One of our recent guests, an environmental lawyer from Toronto, asked if she should bring a computer as she and her husband were going as our guests for two weeks at our unique mountainside, ocean-view, tree house. Although there is internet access in the local cafes, and now in our treehouse, she decided not to bring her laptop. Instead she brought her sketching pad and watercolours to a place that lets one escape from the outside world. Remember - Keep it simple.

The above photo is of an actual epiphyte, and then just above it, her sketch of it. An epiphyte is a plant that grows upon another plant (such as a tree) non-parasitically or sometimes upon some other object (such as a building or a telegraph wire), derives its moisture and nutrients from the air and rain and sometimes from debris accumulating around it.

The Treehouse at night

The design of our treehouse is very unique, practical, and it suits the environment. We like to keep it uncluttered and easy to live in – for us and for our guests. The view from the meditation deck out over the valleys towards the ocean is spectacular.

The house is located in a eco-forest. The area where we are located is rural. The pace is slow and relaxing. The people are friendly and helpful. We absolutely love it there.

The best piano concert that we ever have attended was held right in our treehouse. We simply hopped on a direct flight to be there for it. What an incredible, enjoyable and unforgettable experience!
